About UsBACKGROUND
A group of Perry citizens started to meet in the spring of 1999. They were concerned with the condition of several buildings of historic significance in Perry that appeared in danger of deteriorating to the point that preservation and restoration many not be possible. They were also concerned with the possibility that new owners who may not share the same concern for their historic significance to Perry and preservation could purchase structures of historical significance. The group was well aware of the fact that preservation and restoration of historic buildings, mostly located in the downtown business district, are extremely important for several reasons. In addition to their historic and architectural significance, their restoration is critical to maintaining a viable central business district. They provide an ambiance that is attractive to our residents and to visitors to Perry. The central business district is the stage on which we present our community to visitors, potential residents and potential businesses and industry considering coming to Perry. As our tourism industry continues to grow, well-maintained buildings are critical to attract new business that will cater to these visitors. Tourism spending increases the local option sales tax income to our city. Well-maintained, occupied buildings are move valuable and bring in greater property taxes. Well-maintained buildings will have a positive effect on neighboring buildings thereby nudging along revitalization of the business district and will also increase the property tax base for the entire district. To address these issues, the group formed an organization called the “Nudgers”. MISSION Nudgers, Inc. is dedicated to fostering the development of low-income housing and the preservation of historic buildings in and around Perry, Iowa.
